1989 Topps Major League Debut #74: Julio Machado

Julio Machado

PHOTO: Other than the first line about his ML debut on the back, the first thing the card says is about something he did 4 seasons earlier in 1986. What does that tell you?

STAT: More than 600 guys finished their careers with 75 to 150 IP and Machado had one of the best ERAs of all.

ANAGRAM: Julio Machado = Could I jam a ho?

CAREER: 3/10

He pitched only 147 career innings but finished with a very nice 125 ERA+.

  1. Wait, wait, wait. How do you post something about Julio Machado, one of my favorite Mets of all time, and leave off the two most important things about him? One, the fact that he was nicknamed Iguana Man due to his fondness for iguana meat, and two, that after he retired, he spent twelve years in Venezuelan prison for murder.

    Career 3/10, yes, but post-career? 10/10!

  2. The previous poster beat me to the 'Iguana Man' thing, but more pressing, is anyone else in this set going to beat "Could I jam a ho?" in their anagram?

  3. I had no idea about what happened to Machado after his playing career.

As far as dirty anagrams, I have passed on a lot of them because I don't want this blog to degenerate completely into toilet/adult humor. One card coming up is Chuck McElroy...."he curl my...."
